Journalism, TV & me. Why I love Louis Theroux.

Updated: Feb 25, 2021

Hi my name is Stephen, I'm currently a first-year at the University of Portsmouth studying journalism.

My interest in journalism comes from a variety of areas, each of which engage me into reading or finding the next big story. I have always been interested in the ‘bigger story’, whether it is focused on an individual’s secret scandal or the next big bit of breaking news coming out of politics or entertainment. One of my main reasons for starting this blog is because of media journalism being a growing industry, particularly the TV sector, which is mainly due to the recent spike in popularity of series.

One such person who always peaks my interest is journalist/filmmaker Louis Theroux. His intrusive and intimate interviewing technique paired with his choice of controversial choice of topic focus makes for an engaging watch. Each documentary combines the revealing nature of his subject, making it fascinating for me to watch – as it reveals the truth on topics or subjects which are not always fully understood. A perfect example of this would be his documentary on the Church of Scientology. His showing of the controversial behaviour which surrounds the Church acts as a visual form of journalism, as the audience can see the controversial nature of their acts unfold on camera as Theroux is attempting to develop his story.

Controversial stories will always catch my eye, as they are the first story you see – whichever form of news you read. The biggest stories are ones which everyone hears about, but the journalists are the ones which uncover and break the news – they broadcast it for everyone to see. I’ve always wanted to know and be a part of the process that finds the big story before anyone else, to be the person to know before everyone.
