For this post I’m changing it up slightly, going from the mean streets of 1930’s Birmingham to the quaint and quirky 1980’s town of Hawkins, Indiana to tell you what drew me to the show Stranger Things.
While the genre of Sci-Fi fantasy is not something new or undiscovered, Stranger Things certainly approaches it in a new and exciting way. It is certainly series which I took my time to get to, which at first thought made me think I wouldn’t enjoy it. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Although the idea itself of monsters invading a town, with a lonely band of heroes needing to save the day almost seems cliche for the genre, it works so well with the characters and setting they’ve developed. Not to mention the brilliant writing that combines emotion, comedy and action into a series which you can’t keep your eyes off.
The characters are for me one of the biggest reasons to watch. Of course the plot is what you follow as a viewer because you want to see the final outcome, but the characters are what you stay for. They each have their own story to develop that mixes with the madness they are surrounded by. The losers club have problems any other teenager may have - but when paired with the fight against monsters from another dimension, you simply can’t dislike their characters.
Perhaps the biggest thing which drew me to the show however was its contrast of era and genre. The bright colours of the 80’s being blended with the dark, violent fantasy genre is something I have never personally seen before.
Its originality makes it an exciting watch that can have you hooked in minutes. Take it from me, someone who didn’t have high hopes to begin with - I finished all 25 episodes in under two weeks.
