Portsmouth FC now have a match every Tuesday and Saturday until the end of March. This week alone they will have three games in eight days.
This is raising another question about football scheduling amongst the already big debate surrounding Liverpool’s displeasure with the number of games they have to play in a short space of time.
The Premier League teams do not have a league schedule this heavy and fans of lower league teams are beginning to show their anger. Andy Jackson from Twitter said ‘Liverpool are so entitled’, adding that ‘Premier League schedules are easy compared to the Football League.’.
It is understandable that fans are angry about the schedule, they want to see their team play as well as possible. Speaking as a fan myself, you want to see exciting, good quality football, it’s the reason so many fans tune in or go and watch every game live. But with a schedule like this it would not be surprising if fatigue and injuries were common for Portsmouth players in the coming months. Possible injuries that would impact the race for a playoff position - meaning the schedule could be detrimental to the club's push for promotion.
Aaron Newlan also took to Twitter to voice his frustration with the situation, saying ‘If you support the premier league clubs, try having our schedule of games’.

Therefore, the outcry from fans around the Football League for the schedule to be changed seems very fair. Not only because fatigue and too many injuries would lower the quality of play, but because when the health of players and potential success of a club is involved, it is reasonable to expect a larger rest period for players in between games. This would surely make it better for both players and fans.
